Senior : The Arts : Introduction

The extensive co-curricular activities at Knox are in place to expand and challenge the students. These activities include a substantial involvement in drama, music, art, chess, debating and public speaking as well as special-interest clubs for such activities as science and robotics.

Knox has a strong tradition of musical performance and drama production. The Knox Academy of Performing Arts (KAPA) offers combined music and drama performances. KAPA productions and school plays are open to all students regardless of whether they are Music or Drama students.

The School’s productions are of a high quality and the boys enjoy the success of these highly creative and challenging performances. Several quality productions are undertaken in conjunction with girls from nearby independent schools. KAYO (Knox Abbotsleigh Youth Orchestra) is an example of one of the high level standard of performance opportunities offered.

Drama performances include class plays, up to three school plays a year, The KnOscars (a film festival) and group-devised plays that are really assessment tasks marked in front of an audience of friends and family.

Outside of the Drama Department Knox offers speech training that leads to IMEB exams. Toastmasters run public speaking courses at Knox and boys engage in speech competitions. Instruction in speech is provided by specialist teachers.

Knox offers a variety of Concert Bands, Orchestra, Big Bands, Pipe Band and smaller ensembles for all interested students. An extensive quality tutor program for individual instrument and vocal tuition is available to all students. Expert tuition is provided for a wide variety of instruments and the voice.

The Gallery Choir, in the tradition of an all-boys’ church choir, is one of the major performance groups, drawing on members from both Preparatory and Senior Schools.

Art Exhibitions in both the Preparatory and Senior Schools are significant annual events. The boys enjoy displaying the work they produce, and public recognition is seen as an important part of celebrating the boys’ art.

Debating at Knox is both social and competitive. Beginning in the Prep School, students are able to participate in competitive external competitions, such as the ISDA and CAS. Regular coaching, House debating and other opportunities assist students to develop their skills and confidence.
