Knox has a strong tradition of involvement in the performing arts, including musical performance.
The Knox Academy of Performing Arts inaugural year was 2007 and will expand and enhance the current opportunities in music, drama, theatre, film and video, musicals and dance for all students in the school. As an all-inclusive Academy, it offers an array of performance opportunities, master classes, workshops, arts programs, events and competitions which will be accessible to all students regardless of prior experience. The Academy will also host in-services, conferences, workshops in the arts for visiting student groups, Knox staff, parents and community members. The building of state-of-the-art facilities at Knox will support the developing arts programs.
Music is an academic subject in which Knox students demonstrate excellent SC and HSC results across all three courses. Boys are consistently nominated for Encore in both performance and composition. The school's Composer-in-Residence and inspirational teaching staff ensure outstanding academic achievement through to the HSC Extension Course level.
The School has two concert bands, an orchestra and a Big Band, chamber groups, a choir, a Pipe Band, Jazz, Stage and rock bands and many ensembles with a wide range of instruments. The Gallery Choir, in the tradition of an all-boys' church choir, is one of the School's major performance groups, drawing its members from both the Preparatory and Senior Schools.
The School's productions are of high quality and the boys enjoy the success of these highly creative and challenging performances. Many of the highest-level productions within the School are undertaken in conjunction with girls from nearby independent schools. KAYO (the Knox Abbotsleigh Youth Orchestra) is an outstanding example of the high standard achieved by performance groups within the School. The Knox Grammar musical is another fine annual performance activity with an excellent reputation. Co-Curricular: Music Many students decide to study instruments and voice on a private basis, giving them access to the various performance groups outlined above as well as an increased potential to follow music through to the HSC as a subject and in tertiary institutions.
The School values the boys' involvement in these activities in addition to their other school commitments.
Fundamental to the teaching of music at Knox is that every student should have the opportunity to appreciate music and participate to his fullest ability. The School's approach to fulfilling the curriculum requirements is via practical involvement. To this end, every student in Year 7 has class lessons in both violin and keyboard, in addition to normal musicology classes. Many students decide to study instruments on a private basis, giving them access to any of the School bands or orchestras and the potential to follow music through as a subject to the HSC and beyond.
