The Knox Grammar School Pipe Band bagan in 1946 with a group of ten boys and three sets of bagpipes. Pipers and drummers first appeared on Cadet Parade in 1947.
The arduous question of what tartan should be worn was settled finally in favour of the Macpherson. In 1952 it was decided to put the entire cadet unit into kilts.
Since then the band has become an integral part of the Knox tradition. The band practices two mornings each week before school and performs regularly at a range of functions such as Anzac Day and other special Cadet parades, Speech Day, School events, community fetes and garden parties and pipe band competitions, etc. |

The band assists the Cadets on special occasions but is not part of the Cadet Unit. Band members can participate in normal Cadet activities unless the band is playing. Band members can achieve rank such as Drum Sergeant, Pipe Major, etc.
The Master in Charge of the Pipe Band, Bill Hart, is responsible for the overall management of the band and the event performances. He also conducts individual lessons for learner-pipers and band marching drills. The Band Manager, Lachlan Liao, organises tuition for the drummers and liaises with the various event organisers and pipe band suppliers. He should be contacted for any enrolment information or requests for the Band or individuals to perform. Drum lessons are given by two instructors, one for the snare drum and one for the tenor/bass drums.
The School owns a number of sets of bagpipes and all the drums, many of which have been donated by the OKGA & KPA. Pipe Band uniforms, except for the balmoral and white shirts, are provided by the School. |
