Lesson fees are payable directly to the teacher each semester, at an annually specified rate. A semester usually comprises sixteen lessons over two terms. One term's notice of withdrawal must be given in writing to the Headmaster or one term's fee must be paid. Lessons missed through teacher absence will be credited or made up. Students must give prior notice to the teacher or organise to swap times in the event of examination or excursion. Lessons missed through the student's fault are only made up at the discretion of the teacher.
Secondary students own their own instruments and only the Preparatory School offers a few instruments for hire. Local and city music stores offer various hire purchase arrangements.
Examinations It is anticipated once students are established on their instruments, generally after 12 months' tuition, they will take either AMEB or Trinity College examinations. This is to provide an annual, assessable goal similar to all subjects studied at Knox. It provides a structured study program and secures the possibility of a suitable standard should students decide to take Music as an academic subject up to School Certificate or Higher School Certificate levels. Examination fees are payable to the examination body.
