Ewan House Boarding, Yrs 11 and 12 - virtual tour

Knox is one of Australia’s leading Boarding Schools specialising in boys’ education; Knox prepares boys for university and the world beyond.

Boarding at Knox is available from Years 7 to 12. Although the largest intake of boys into boarding is in Year 7, boarders join in all Years through to Year 12. The School offers boarding for up to 130 boys.

One of the great attractions of boarding at Knox is the boys’ ability to access the School’s high-quality programs while broadening their social interactions.

Traditionally, our boarders have come from country properties and overseas but today the background of our boarding community is genuinely mixed – boys come from country properties and towns, surrounding suburbs and overseas.

As in a family, the safety of our boarders is a priority. The boys will make enduring friendships in a safe and secure environment. Boarders at Knox are accommodated in separate on-campus houses according to their Year groups. Years 7 to 11 boarders are accommodated in shared rooms and move to individual rooms in Year 12.

A live-in Housemaster and his wife work as a team to oversee supervision and pastoral care in each of the boarding houses. The day-to-day management of boys is carried out by resident adult staff with tutors offering additional assistance during supervised homework and study times in the evening.

There is an on-site clinic, a quality, balanced diet provided by professional caterers and additional access out of hours to the school’s facilities. At Knox Grammar School your son has a home away from home where he is treated as an individual and encouraged to belong.

Outstanding performance over the last few years in HSC results validates the structured daily study program, which includes visiting tutors as well as break time, where the School’s impressive facilities are available for the Boarding Community to use. Knox recognises the diversity of modern family and work situations with a flexible approach to working with families regarding leave arrangements but still encouraging the student to make the most of Boarder weekend activities and programs. Boarders have the benefit of first class facilities including the new Dining Room, already in operation.

We provide:
• secure, comfortable accommodation within a family community
• Year group housing making it easy to develop friendships
• 24-hour supervision and support by professional, friendly staff
• a quality, balanced diet provided by professional caterers
• structured and assisted evening study
• after-school sporting, outdoor education and cultural activities
• extended use of superb facilities
• scheduled weekend activities and outings
• on-site clinic

Academic Results
Boarders at Knox continue to benefit enormously from the structured study environment and tutoring provided; their HSC results reveal a consistent pattern of superior academic achievement. Most boarders in 2008 exceeded their expectations and gained admittance to the universities of their choice to study Engineering, Arts and Economics among others; the 2008 top Knox boarder UAI was 97.50. Some of our rural boarders are experiencing a change in environment by undertaking an overseas GAP year, before commencing their tertiary studies, working in English boarding schools.

Knox boarding prides itself on its reputation for academic excellence - a direct result of all Years 7-11 students doing prep in a central room where an adult is present to supervise and assist at all times.  Each student has his own desk space with internet access.  In Year 12, students are more mature and motivated and do prep in their own rooms.

Looking Ahead

The new five-level Boarding House will be ready in 2010 and will feature the traditional Knox architectural elements – brickwork, gables, windows and corbels. Each will provide a consistent thread to blend with the Main Building and KG1. The design allows for much flexibility and provides the following state-of-the-art facilities:

• Single rooms for senior boarders (Yrs 11-12) with ensuite
• Quad rooms for junior boarders (Yrs 7-10) with two ensuites
• Recreation rooms, breakout spaces, kitchen facilities and reading and study areas
• Clinic, comprising an 8-bed ward, nurses’ overnight accommodation unit and observation ward
• Entry foyer, waiting area, reception and parents' room

Combined with a new purpose-built Dining Room, this truly is a "Home at School".
