Senior : Student Care : Student Leadership
Overview | Focus | 2010 Leaders | 2009 Leaders | Awards
The development of leadership through service is of fundamental importance to the School because we believe all boys have the capacity to serve and to lead. This shows itself in different ways and the School has a variety of methods of recognising and acknowledging differences in the boys.
Boys are given the opportunity to lead through sporting teams and activities such as music, debating, chess, drama production, the Cadet Unit and house activities, which are a significant means for taking responsibility to organise events and to lead and assist fellow students.
The Senior School has a prefect system which selects boys of exceptional ability to lead the student body. From within the student body, boys are appointed to positions of House Prefects and School Seniors for their varying levels of contribution and service to fellow students and the School. The opinions of both students and staff are invited with regard to the appointment of School leaders, with great significance being given to the boys' opinions.
Leadership is not an option at Knox but rather, an integral part of every boy's education. Nonetheless, leadership is not always exercised through holding a position. Knox boys also learn to exercise moral leadership as a group member in a variety of contexts:
- Collaborative learning in classrooms.
- Speaking out against injustice.
- Supporting peers and others.
- Running group meetings.
- Community service and participation in amnesty meetings.
- Knox expeditions which include a group service element.
