Senior : Student Care : Community Service
The Knox Community Service Program initially involves Year 10 boys in the first step of what is hoped will become a much larger program for all boys in the years ahead. It is a key part of our social justice program which will be progressively developed and implemented throughout 2007 and 2008.
Aims
- A spirit of service to others
- Social awareness
- Social skills
- Leadership training
- Community awareness
- Team building
- Living out our Knox values in the wider community
In achieving these aims boys will be involved in activities such as:
- Working with the disadvantaged
- Working with organisations - Christmas Appeals
- Companionship for the sick elderly - board games, cards, reading, writing cards
- Music
- Supporting care workers
- Outdoor - gardening, general cleanup
Approach The program is organised by a committee of Knox teachers. All boys will be placed in groups and assigned a Knox teacher who will welcome the boys on the first day of their placement and visit the boys during their service placement. All venues for placements will be visited before the day of placement in order to check facilities, meet relevant supervisors and ensure all aspects of OH&S and Child Protection are met.
The format of each week will be: Day One: Orientation process at Knox which will include a presentation from organisations participating in the CSP. The boys will be advised about dress/bearing/transport/activities/responsibilities. Day Two-Day Four: Placements at the various venues. Day Five: Evaluation at Knox and barbeque.
Working in the community The support from the community has been overwhelming with the project being embraced with enthusiasm and support. Participants welcome an opportunity to develop the social awareness and community awareness of our boys; some have welcomed renewing a link with Knox that had been lost in the past; others see the opportunity to help those they care for as we reach out to support them.
The boys will be working with a range of community organisations and groups such as:
- The veterans at Lady Davidson Rehabilitation Hospital
- Helping with less able students at nearby St Lucy's
- Attending the Governor General's Picnic as helpers for the disabled
- Helping out at the Exodus Foundation
- Packing food hampers for Anglicare
- Gardening, at the The San Hospital in preparation for their annual Carols by Candlelight and at St Andrew's Uniting Church, South Turramurra.
The vision is for this program to expand substantially in what will be a 'win/win' experience for the students of Knox and the wider community.
