Senior : Nuts and Bolts : Absentees and Lates

Parents and carers need to call the school by 9.00am on the day their son is absent from school.  Please call by 9.00am on the mornning of the absence and speak to or leave a message for the relevant Student Administration Officer listed below, providing your name, the name and year group of your son and a brief reason for the absence.

If a phone call has not been received by the due time, parents will be contacted regarding the absence.

Y7 and 8 Administrator:  Mrs Lynda Collinson (02) 9487 0429
Y9 and 10 Administrator: Mrs Louise Priestly  (02) 9487 0430
Y11 and 12 Administrator: Mrs Marita Tyler (02) 9487 0431

The Board of Studies requires a follow up note from parents for absenses when your son returns to school.  This should be addressed and handed to the relevant Student Administration Officer, located in the Student Administration Centre in Room 19 in the Main Building, the SAO Office.

Absences
All students are expected to attend school every day except when illness, injury, or some other condition beyond their control prevents them from doing so. Regular school attendance is directly related to developing habits of punctuality, self-discipline, responsibility, and achievement of high marks. Each day's absence makes it more difficult for the student to catch up when they return to school.

If a valid reason for the absence is obtained from the parent / guardian, the absence will be considered excused and will be noted as such on the student's record. The following reasons are the only excusable absences:

  • personal illness documented by the parent/guardian or a physician
  • illness of a family member requiring your care
  • death of a member of the immediate family or friend
  • attending at a funeral
  • doctor or dentist appointment
  • court appearance
  • bad weather
  • required religious observations
  • genuine late arrival of public transport.

Written excuses are necessary and students without a note will receive an unexcused absence.  Emails are helpful when informing the School of student absences but are not considered to be a written note.

Late arrivals (Lates)
Being punctual to school is important to the student and the School. It is the student's responsibility to get to school on time.  If a student develops a pattern of lateness the student will be spoken to by the Yearmaster and his parents may be contacted.

A student will be considered to be late to school if he arrives after the second bell at 8:25 am. The school will not call home on the occasion a boy is late to school but any student who is late to school must go to Room 19 to get a Late Slip.

Lates will be recorded throughout the year and disciplinary action taken on a term basis for those students who are late to school without good reason.  The following excuses are considered as being late without good reason:

  • oversleeping
  • disorganised
  • no reason
  • two or more late arrivals to school e.g. due to transport, may be considered as being late without good reason.

Disciplinary Action

1st Late to School Warning or School detention from Yearmaster
2nd Late to School After-School detention with GDM
SAO notifies Yearmaster who issues School detention at year meeting, copying the GDM and tutor
3rd Late to School After-School detention with GDM
Yearmaster contacts SAO who sends a letter home, copying the Yearmaster and tutor
4th Late to School 1/2 day Saturday detention with GDM
5th Late to School 1/2 day Saturday detention, letter sent home and parent interview with Yearmaster
6th Late to School Full Saturday detention, interview with Head of Senior School/Dean of Studies and school probation

Late, Absence or Early Departure notes

Y7 and 8 Administrator:  Mrs Lynda Collinson (02) 9487 0429
Y9 and 10 Administrator: Mrs Louise Priestly  (02) 9487 0430
Y11 and 12 Administrator: Mrs Marita Tyler (02) 9487 0431

The Head of the Senior School or Dean of Students only may excuse a boy's absence for certain special events or partial daily absences when requested in writing by a boy's parent or guardian.  Arrangements should be made in advance of the absence in order for the boy to be excused.
