Although our current players have some experience of chess before they reach senior school, complete beginners are very welcome. Knox chess teams engage in two separate competitions throughout the year:
The CAS Competition Running during Term 1, this involves one senior (Yrs 11 and 12), one intermediate (Yrs 9 and 10) and one junior (Yrs 7 and 8) team. Games are held against all CAS Schools on Friday afternoons.
The New South Wales Junior Chess League Secondary Inter-Schools Competition (NSWJCL) Beginning in Term 2 and continuing in Term 3, approximately 100 schools compete in Sydney in one of four regions. Knox competes in the Metropolitan North Region, entering as many teams as we like in each division. Each team plays approximately seven rounds and qualifying teams go on to play other regional winners in knock-out finals to see who is crowned NSW State Champions.
Students are informed early during Term 1 by their Year Master when to contact the Master in Charge of chess and form competition teams. Those interested must realise they will need to commit themselves to one extra afternoon of training per week during competition.
External / Adult Tournaments Students are also encouraged to participate in a one-day or weekend tournament every term. These tournaments are run by the NSWJCL and details of starting times and venues will be available closer to the dates. |
