Contact List - MIC Debating
Debating at Knox is both social and competitive. All students are welcome and encouraged to participate. Students who wish to participate, either socially or competitively, should see the Master in Charge and check the main breezeway noticeboard for all debating information.
The main areas of involvement and activity are:
- Social debating against other local schools. Up to fifteen teams participate, and we work to ensure that all interested students are offered opportunities.
- House debating, as part of the Cock House Shield, offers opportunities for boys to compete in a non-threatening atmosphere across three divisions:
- junior (Years 7 and 8) - intermediate (Years 9 and 10) - senior (Years 11 and 12).
- CAS debating is the highly competitive debating schedule running in parallel to the other CAS sports. The standard is very high and opportunities are limited. In 2007, the Knox Firsts took out the CAS premiership.
- ISDA debating runs in the first semester and represents the highest level of competition. Knox has been very successful in this arena, making positions on the team well sought after by students but opportunities limited.
- Adjudication skills are taught to students who are used frequently in the role at House and School levels. This is an area where non-debaters can be involved.
- Workshops are held each year to assist in the development of debating skills.
- University Debating Tournaments; Knox sends teams to schools' debating tournaments at UTS and Macquarie University. This is a great opportunity for new debaters to try out the activity and for more experienced debaters to hone their skills.
