Senior : Other Activities : Public Speaking
There are several ways for students to be involved with public speaking and performance at Knox.
Public Speaking Public speaking embraces both School and local competitions. The main areas involved are the Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition, the highly important Plain English Speaking Competition (Australia-wide) and the prestigious Lawrence Campbell Oratory Competition (GPS and CAS Schools only). Students are encouraged to participate, and are tutored if they elect to do so.

Toastmasters On Tuesday evenings during Terms 1 and 3, students are encouraged to develop speaking and leadership qualities by members of the Turramurra Branch of Toastmasters International. Toastmasters is a non-profit organisation, dedicated to helping its members to improve their ability to speak effectively, and to develop and strengthen their communication skills.
The courses involve seven two-hour workshops, which entail practical experience in meeting procedures with sessions allocated to specific activities such as speech construction, impromptu responses, evaluation and instructional segments. These allow for maximum, active participation by the students in a range of very popular roles such as chairman, evaluator, grammarian, timer and Sergeant-at-Arms.
The final evening's graduation takes the form of a showcase and contest in which all students participate variously for an audience of parents, staff and guests. The course is open to all students from Yrs 9-11 and is a compulsory component of the Yr10 boarders' pastoral care program.
