Community Service
|
Community Service at Knox is a unique learning experience for our Year 10 students and forms one of the service components of the larger Social Justice Project. This initiative gives the boys the opportunity to build a personal spirit of service to others, gain leadership skills and grow into fine young men with compassion and an increased sense of social responsibility.
The Community Service program is a compulsory part of Year 10 at Knox. Increasingly, young people who have participated in Community Service are selected for leadership positions in schools and universities. Australia’s largest university, ACU, looks at Community Service performance as an important criterion for entry selection and many other universities are following this trend. Details of the Early Achievers Program are available on the ACU website www.acu.edu.au.
Students are placed at a number of charity organisations, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, schools for disabled children and local pre-schools and kindergartens for one week, in order to serve their community. |

All students will be required to sign an undertaking which outlines the responsibilities of Community Service. At the completion of his service, Knox Grammar School records feedback about each student, feedback which is based on the Evaluation Form completed by the organisation’s Community Service Supervisor(s) and information which will be reflected in his Year 12 School Leaver’s Portfolio.
Knox Grammar School regards Community Service as an invaluable experience for the students and has been successfully completed by hundreds of Knox boys. Below are some comments made by some of the many organisations – comments which are impressive and endorse what the philanthropist Albert Schweitzer has once said:
"The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve" Albert Schweitzer
