Senior : Outdoor Education and School Tours : Outdoor Education

Welcome to the section of the Knox website dedicated to the exciting program of Outdoor Education being offered at the school.

Through involvement with leading and professional outdoor specialists,  Knox is able to offer some truly exciting opportunities for the boys to challenge themselves in places and through activities that are of real personal interest to them. The program includes both compulsory and voluntary components.

Knox provides boys with the opportunity to learn and expand their horizons beyond the classroom and school grounds through a range of outdoor adventure and touring experiences.

All boys in Years 3 to 10 participate in an integrated program of camps and outdoor adventures as part of the regular school and cadet program. These outdoor experiences take students away from the familiar and comfortable and allow them the chance to push themselves in a safe, well-supervised environment.

Progressively these expeditions encourage and allow the boys to take on more personal responsibility and leadership roles with the boys showing maturity by eventually taking control of their own program. The lessons learned here will last a lifetime.

In addition to this, boys in both the Preparatory and Senior School can join a number of regular sporting or cultural tours to interstate and overseas destinations.

Optional outdoor adventures are held during holiday time for Senior School boys. These adventures include sailing on tall ships, building houses in villages in Borneo and Kenya, trekking the Larapinta Trail in central Australia, crossing the south west wilderness in Tasmania or cycling the Otago Rail Trail in New Zealand.

Select groups of Years 9 to 12 boys also have the opportunity to experience overseas cultural, language or youth leadership exchanges to the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, Canada, USA or Argentina.

Rex Pemberton (OKG01) is one such classic example.  Rex became the youngest Australian to ever climb Mount Everest when he reached the summit in May 2005. One of Rex's teachers remembers the difference in young Rex while still a student at Knox when he returned from his first expedition to South America. That staff member remembers the complete change in Rex from being a quiet and diligent student up the back of the classroom to a confident and focused young man, all in the space of a few weeks. That teacher comments the change was striking and positive - and if you could hear Rex speak of his accomplishments now, it is an experience we would all want for our boys.
