Senior : Outdoor Education : Our staff

Outdoor Education at Knox is headed up by Mark Trollope, who works with the other areas of the school also involved in outdoor activities - such as cadets and Duke of Edinburgh - to ensure a coordinated program.   Mark also engages professional providers to implement camps and expeditions and is supported by other interested staff members who accompany the boys.  To ensure high levels of knowledge and safety, staff undertake specialist training.  The most recent exercise in 2006 was in wilderness saftey.

Wild Aid Wilderness Emergency Response courses are remote area-based first aid programs designed to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond effectively and safely to all emergency situations when definitive medical care will be delayed.  The courses take place in an environment where theory and practice meet to present the participant with a well-rounded exposure to the essential information necessary to supply first aid and the vital practical competences behind this theory. These courses provide participants with the essential opportunity to experience training exercises in the field. firstaid1.jpg

It is an absolute necessity to have people who operate in remote areas trained effectively to manage emergency situations while definitive medical care will be delayed by such factors as time, topography and weather. These skills save lives.

Knox staff undertook a combination of the 2 and 3-day emergency response programs, specially designed for us.  It provided exposure to the fundamentals of first aid and an understanding of remote area first aid practices. The 2-day course is conducted as two full days of training with evening work on one of the days and awards participants with nationally recognised units of competency are mapped from the Certificate 3 in Outdoor Recreation. Course subjects included:

    Communications and general safety equipment
Casualty monitoring and vital signs assessment
    On-going care considerations and management
Lifting and moving in the field

Elements of the 3-day wilderness response program were also incorporated. This course has its foundation in the knowledge and skills that make up urban-based first aid outcomes and goes on to develop this knowledge and skills base to facilitate the management of injured or ill persons in environments where emergency medical care will be delayed.
