Rules for Facilities | Community Use
Knox offers extensive sporting facilities for students, sometimes opening them up to the wider Knox community. Each has its own rules to be observed by students and patrons.

Lawson Centre This multi-purpose PE Centre is open weekdays from 8.00am to 5.30pm. On Saturdays the Centre is usually occupied with sport games against other Schools in basketball, volleyball and squash. Learn-to-swim classes and diving are held throughout the year in our pools. The Centre is used exclusively by our boarders on Sundays.
Attendance Rules
- No student is to be in the building outside opening hours unless he is engaged in a special activity organised and supervised by a teacher.
- Students are asked to wait outside until invited in by the Master on Duty. No one is to enter the building outside these guidelines.
- Security is of great importance and anyone finding a door or window open when it should be closed must notify the Head of PDHPE, Director of School Programs or the Resident Master on Duty at once.
Safety Rules
- Students should always think 'Safety First - Use Common Sense'.
- No school shoes, bags etc. are to be left in the foyer area or corridors. They must be left in change rooms.
- No food or drink is allowed in the PE Centre.

Swimming Pool There are special rules related to use of the swimming pool:
- Students must not enter the pool area without the permission of the Swimming Supervisor or the teacher on duty.
- No one with a contagious disease or open wound is permitted in the pool.
- No food, drink or gum is allowed in the pool area.
- Students must take a towel into the pool area and dry off before leaving the area.
- Swimming pool rules and diving pool rules must be followed at all times.
- Speedo-type costumes only may be worn. Board shorts are not acceptable.
- Goggles, which can be purchased at the Knox Shop, must always be worn in the pool.

| Squash Courts There are special rules related to use of the squash courts:
- The courts may be used prior to School, at lunch and after School.
- White soled/non-marking shoes must be worn at all times.
- Students must change into t-shirts, shorts or tracksuit and non-marking shoes at all times.
- Lights can only be turned on by a member of the teaching staff.
- Students must supply their own equipment.
- Racquetball may be played by arrangement, instead of squash.
- Students must have their own gear and ball.
- Protective eyewear is strongly recommended; enquire at the PE Centre Office.

Weights Room The Knox weights room has undergone extensive refurbishment and is now a first class facility offering many forms of training and rehabilitation. Please contact the PE staff prior to use.
- Students may only use this facility if they have a weights room authorisation card from a PDHPE staff member.
- Students must be dressed in activity clothing and gym shoes at all times.
- Safety rules must be followed at all times.
- No spectators are permitted in the weights room at any time.
- Weights equipment must be returned to its correct position immediately after use.
- Students must be working on an approved Knox program, available from the PE Centre office.
- Students below Year 9 are not allowed into the weights room for safety reasons.
- Year 9 students complete a written and practical examination during class time. They are then issued with a card to enable them to use the weights room.
- A towel is a compulsory for health reasons. Water bottles are advisable.

| Gymnasium and Outside Courts Gymnasium Floor This is available for use before School, lunchtime and after school when no training is scheduled. Dress rules are as listed above in Squash Courts.
Outside Courts Rules in relation to using the outside courts are:
- Non-marking soled shoes are to be worn at all times.
- Dress rules are as listed above in "Squash Courts".
- Use the pathways. Don't walk through the gardens.
- Don't leave basketballs lying in the sun.
Change Rooms Rules in relation to the change rooms are:
- The change rooms are for changing. No misbehaviour will be tolerated.
- All gear should be left in the change rooms only (including bags).
Offices
- No student shall enter the Swimming Supervisor's office, the staff office or the storeroom without permission.
- There is a staff member on duty each day in the Centre. Enquiries should be directed to the Duty Master. Prefects and seniors will also be on duty.
Store Room
- This area is completely out of bounds to all students unless under the direct supervision of a staff member.
- Equipment used during classes must be arranged and returned tidily to the correct place in the store. Nets should be folded correctly before placement on shelves.
- The Store Master is in charge of the store after School each day. Any student requiring any sporting equipment either for personal use or for the use of a team should see him.
- All equipment must be signed out.
- Equipment must be returned to the store at the latest by 5.15pm each afternoon.
- Teams whose kit requires replacement of equipment should see the Teacher in Charge before reporting to the store. This should be arranged in good time, well in advance of requirements. Replacements will not be made at the last minute.
PDHPE - General Rules Knox has general rules for students involved in sports and physical education activities at the School:
- No school shoes, bags etc. are to be left in the foyer area or corridors, they should be left in change rooms.
- Students should change in the change rooms only.
- At the start of each activity class, students go directly to the change rooms allocated by their teacher. Once changed, students are to remain in their change room and wait for their teacher to make roll call. All valuables are to be kept in lockers.
- At the end of each period students are to change back into their school uniform as quickly and quietly as possible and then wait in the Lawson PE Centre foyer until the bell rings. No student is to leave the Centre before the bell.
- Boarders must not change in the boarding houses. They must use PE Centre change rooms.
- Illness or injury - if a student cannot participate for any reason, he must bring a note from his parent. Every attempt will be made to devise an activity in which the student can participate, so uniform should still be brought to each lesson.
- Misbehaviour in the change rooms will not be tolerated. Any student(s) found misbehaving or making excessive noise in the change rooms will be dealt with accordingly.
