Boy and Bear - the success of an Old Boy

02-Sep-2011

Winners: Australian band Boy and Bear perform at the ARIA Awards.
Sydney band Boy and Bear have taken out five awards at this year's ARIAs, including the coveted best group and best album prizes for their acclaimed debut 'Moonfire'.

The folk five-piece also picked up best adult contemporary album, along with breakthrough album and the breakthrough single award for the song 'Feeding Line'.

After they picked up the breakthrough album award Boy and Bear said they should not have won.

"We're so grateful for it. I think that the best album of the year is The Middle East but that's just me," drummer Tim Hart told the audience.

"I'm going to get in trouble for that I'm sorry."

Knox Grammar School has taught and helped to form many musical artists over the years and in particular, the band Boy & Bear has had much success with the help of Old Boy Dave Hosking (OKG '04), who shows exceptional talent as their lead singer.

Also, the backing strings in the ARIA performance was lead by Jeremy Curran (OKG '98) and his company, Musical Functions (www.musicalfunctions.com.au).

Formed in 2009, Boy & Bear originally began as a solo project for Dave Hosking. Jake Tarasenko joined and then they expanded with Killian Gavin and Tim Hart, all members being singers and songwriters.

Since the band’s dulcet tones first hypnotised listeners across Triple j's radio waves in September 2009, Boy & Bear have found themselves in the spotlight. Their single ‘Mexican Mavis’ had the industry whispering and music fans clambering.

Rumours of their live show quickly spread and Boy & Bear soon found themselves touring with the royalty of folk rock, Angus & Julia Stone, Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling throughout Australia. Boy & Bear impressed, so much so that Laura Marling invited the band to tour with her through the UK. In fact, two members of Boy & Bear, Jake Tarasenko and Tim Hart, also did a stint doubling up as members of Laura’s touring band.

Their live show takes the band to another plane, evidenced by their critically-praised, sold-out national "Blood To Gold Tour" across September and October 2010. The songs presented on debut EP “With Emperor Antarctica” pack a bigger punch when taken to the live forum.

On 5 August 2011, Boy & Bear released their debut album 'Moonfire'. The album was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Joe Chicarelli. The album reached at #2 on the Australian iTunes Store, as well as #2 on the ARIA Top 50 Albums Chart.
