Diving into Lightning Ridge

21-Jul-2011

Knox diver and Year 9 student, Liam Dummer, was one of the star attractions at the recent opening of the new Lightning Ridge Indoor Diving Complex. Liam was well qualified to dazzle the crowd with his twists and turns, having represented Australia in the Malaysian Age Diving Championships which were held in Seremban, Malaysia. He won gold from the 10 metre platform, came 4th in the 3m event and 7th in the 1m event.

Liam hopes that the new centre in the North West will inspire the next generation of international hopefuls, and in fact Rory Cheal, the Walgett Shire Council Junior Sportsperson of the Year in 2011 will be coming to Knox in 2012.

Prior to becoming a diver, Liam was a gymnast and has been diving seriously with NSW Institute of Sport for 18 months. He has qualified for Australian Elite Junior Nationals to be held in Adelaide during the July holidays and School Nationals to be held in Melbourne in August.

Knox has a very talented diving team which includes Christian Holman (Year 8) and Nick Jeffree (Year 9) who also train with Liam at the NSW Institute of Sport and have also qualified for both national events. These three boys took the podium positions at the recent NSW State Elite Diving championships. The wider Knox team, which won the CAS Diving Championships, and includes William Jeffree (Year 7), is looked after by Olympic medallist and Boarding House Manager Rebecca Manuel, who as Rebecca Gilmore, won the bronze medal in the 10 metre Synchronised Diving event at the Sydney Olympics.
