A group of basketball players from a school in Sydney, Australia, should have more than a good day, it should be an eye-opening two weeks, when they arrive Sunday in Chicago. First stop is Oswego on their tour that features seven games against Illinois high school teams.

Oswego East’s basketball program will serve as hosts to freshmen, junior varsity and varsity players from the Knox Grammar School, a day and boarding school from down under.

“Doug Smith, the former AD at Naperville North brought a tour up here almost five years ago and we played them there,” said Oswego East coach Jason Buckley, remembering his first team that featured seniors in 2007.

“I think it’s a great idea. We’re having parents from our program host the kids and they’ll shadow our kids when they come to school on Monday.”

The Australian teams begin play today with games against Naperville Central and play Oswego East on Tuesday with lower level games at 5:30 and varsity at 7 p.m.

“There’s just a little bit of a buzz at school about it. It should be a neat experience,” said Buckley.

It’s organized by Craig Douglass of North Carolina-based Sports Travel Academy, which handles a similar summer tour of Australia by the University of North Carolina basketball team.

“I was told they’re not as good as the last team we saw but still pretty good,” said Buckley. “It will be a great opportunity to play somebody different.”

The Australian teams will then spend a couple days with Benet Academy families and shadow students there as well as play teams from Naperville North, West Chicago, Benet and downstate Olympia and East Peoria during their stay.

It will include trips to see the University of Illinois-Coppin State game next Sunday, a minor league hockey game as well as tours of DePaul University and Chicago before the team flies to Los Angeles for its final week. A UCLA game and stop at Disneyland are on the itinerary.

East Peoria 43, Knox School 27
The Raiders dominated their international foe from Sydney, Australia, suburb Wahroonga Saturday.

Host East Peoria (1-5) allowed its fewest points of the season while bursting into the win column. Crotz accounted for 22 points, a game-high total, to give the Raiders a weekend split.

East Peoria’s defense was particularly stout in the second and third quarters when it allowed only five total points over that 16-minute span to expand a five-point lead to 18. Seven other Raiders scored in a unique matchup.

No Knox player reached double figures. Five of the team’s 11 field goals were from long distance. See the article at
