After winning the NSW Secondary Schools’ One-Day Tournament in June, Bernard Chau (Y10, Captain), Kinto Wan (Y11), Vincent Chen (Y8), Sean Dawson (Y10) and Nicholas Forster (Y10) continued to have such an exceptional year in their various age competitions that they were invited to compete in a open team playoff with Sydney Grammar School, Sydney Boys High and The Scots College to determine who would be NSW’s premier open chess team.

On 14 August, in a dramatic day of chess, our young team played superbly and toppled a number of higher rated players to eventually win the tense playoff. Knox Grammar School will now represent NSW at the Australian Schools Teams Championships to be held in December. The tournament is in Sydney this year and will be held at Knox in the new Great Hall. Tournament organiser, Charles Zworestine, President of the NSW Junior Chess League, runs the tournament and is thrilled with the venue.

The Australian Schools’ Teams Chess Championships are in Sydney this year and Knox Grammar School will be proudly hosting the event in the Great Hall on Saturday, 3 and Sunday, 4 December. The Knox Open Team consisting of Bernard Chau (Yr10), Kinto Wan (Yr11), Vincent Chen (Yr8), Nicholas Forster (Yr10), and Sean Dawson (Yr10) are the 2011 NSW State Open Champions (after prevailing against Sydney Grammar School and Sydney Boys’ High in a playoff in August) and as such will be representing NSW at this prestigious event. Good luck to all participants. Spectators are most welcome.
