The Official Opening of the Great Hall and Aquatic Centre

16-Aug-2011

The entire Preparatory and Senior Schools gathered in one place, on-site, together with distinguished guests, parents and past members of the Knox community.  The occasion? The much-awaited official opening by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of NSW of the Great Hall and Aquatic Centre at Knox Grammar School on Tuesday morning, 16 August 2011.

Accompanied by the Headmaster, Mr Weeks and Mrs Weeks, the Chairman of the School Council Mr Rob Wannan and Mrs Wannan, Chairman of the Capital Campaign Honouring our Past-Building our Future Mr Peter Roach and Mrs Roach, Mr Jim Mein representing the NSW/ACT Synod of the Uniting Church in Australia and School Chaplain Mr Will Nicholas, Deputy Headmaster Mr Scott James and School Captain Matthew Green, Her Excellency was once again able to celebrate with the School the opening of a significant facility, having last year opened the Knox Boarding Centre.

The Headmaster engaged the large and involved gathering in thanking all those who contributed to the project, whilst indicating just how the building represented a confidence, a commitment, and a signal achievement for the school community. The Chairman echoed those sentiments, and gave the audience a sense of the history of Knox’s journey towards what founding Headmaster Neil MacNeil spoke of, a home for the school, a place of gathering and affirmation.

Her Excellency spoke graciously and warmly, praising Knox for its strong tradition of “providing an environment of enlightenment as well as a formal education”; she spoke, too, of her elation at the name Great Hall, confident that the young men of Knox in front of her would emerge to do great things for the wider community, contribute to a better Australia and a better world. She thanked Knox for its magnificent investment in our nation’s greatest resource - our children.

All members of the Knox School Community witnessed a grand ceremony with musical items provided by Knox musical groups.
Tours of the new building took place after the opening.

We will have full coverage next week.
