Prospective : Boarding : Leave
Leave is a privilege, granted according to a strict procedure and stringent efforts are made to ensure staff know the whereabouts of each boy at all times. Provided their weekly House duties and school obligations are completed, all boarders can go on leave after Saturday sport until Sunday evening. A boy may only go on leave to his own family or to a friend or relative who is approved by his parents and housemasters regularly verify this approval. Many choose to stay at School during weekends to study or participate in excursions to the cinema, 10-pin bowling, the beach, museums and such.
| Local Leave |
|
This is obtained through the Resident on Duty (ROD) and allows students to visit the local shops. Y7-10 must wear full School uniform and boater. Y11-12 may wear neat casual clothes (a collared shirt and shoes). |
| Weekend Leave |
|
Boys submit a leave card on Wednesday evening and their parents are required to send through an email - also on Wednesday evening - giving permission for their son to visit the host family in question. This encourages the parents to contact the host beforehand to ensure they are aware of the arrangements and possible weekend activities such as parties etc.
Host families should send through an email to the Housemaster by Thursday lunchtime, providing the following details:
- The time they will be picking up the boarder
- The time they will be dropping the boarder back into Gilmore House
- Their address and phone number (including mobile)
- Request for the Child Protection Form if not already completed.
Parents of boarders are asked to inform their son's Boarding Housemaster by email of all impending leave. |
| Special Leave |
|
Arranged through the Housemaster and with the approval of the Dean of Student Services and Support, this leave is for a student to attend a special event and follows a written request from his parents. |
| Boarders' Weekend |
|
This applies to boarders living beyond Cessnock, Nowra and Lithgow (students living within this boundary are able to go home most weekends after sport). Each "distant" boarder is eligible for one boarders' weekend per term, subject to the approval of the Dean, his Housemaster, his sports coach and cadet officer. A boarders' weekend entitles the student to leave School on Friday afternoon after lessons and return to School on Sunday night before 8.00 pm. |
Closed Weekend
|
|
Students are not permitted leave on certain specified weekends, as determined by individual Housemasters. For example, both Gilmore and MacNeil have a closed weekend when they have a House activity. Closed weekend dates are indicated in the boarding newsletter. |
| Queen's Birthday Weekend |
|
All students are required to go on leave following the completion of their sport commitments, as no boarding facilities will be open until Monday afternoon. Students with sisters at local boarding Schools may apply for early leave to travel home with their sisters. |
Returning from Leave Housemasters require an accurate arrival time when a boy is returning from weekend leave, boarders' weekends or holidays to facilitate catering for meals and supervision.
All boys are expected to return by 8.00pm, except for Ewan House boarders who are expected back at 8.00pm after long weekends and holidays and at 9.30pm after normal leave.
