Prospective : Co-Curricular : Visual Arts

At Knox Grammar School, the Visual Arts curriculum is rich in challenge and will expand students' understanding of the application and philosophy of Visual Arts in our society.  It is an academic subject in which the boys achieve outstanding results in the HSC.

The course provides opportunities for students to challenge their approach to work and to develop creativity, technical skills, conceptual ideas, research, communication and presentation skills which will assist them in their future academic lives and beyond. Visual Arts is a core subject in Yrs 7 and 8 and thereafter, is available as an elective through to Yr12.  The achievements of Knox boys in Visual Arts in the HSC is nothing short of spectacular. It is not unusual for over 75% of the cohort to achieve a Band 6 and for at least half of the students to have their major work considered for Art Express.

Students develop a deeper understanding of the content - subject matter, forms and frames of the Visual Arts through experience in the practices of art making, critical study and historical study. Students engage in a variety of art making activities that could include photography, digital imaging, ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking.

Visual Arts values how students engage in intelligent and adaptive performance, building their own skills and abilities in the production of artworks and critical writings.  The students' learning environment will be based on student talents or areas of interest that excite their imagination and removes restrictions.

The course provides for various interpretations of the visual arts that are both contemporary and relevant.  Fostering interest and enjoyment in the doing, production and consumption of art, the subject seeks to build informed students and discerning audiences for art.
