Knox Grammar School Curriculum Overview Years 7–12

Knox Grammar School follows the New South Wales Board of Studies curriculum in Years 7-12 leading to the award of a School Certificate at the end of Year 10 and a Higher School Certificate at the end of Year 12.

Years 7 and 8 (Stage 4)
In Years 7 and 8, students study the core courses of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE (Personal Development Health and Physical Education) and Christian Studies and are provided with introductory courses in Visual Arts, Music, Languages (French, German and Japanese) and Technology (including Graphics Technology, Design and Technology and Information and Communication Technology).

Years 9 and 10 (Stage 5)
In Years 9 and 10, students continue their study of the core courses of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE and Christian Studies and are able to select two elective courses from a range of courses offered including: Agriculture; Commerce; Drama; French; German; Japanese; Music; Geography (Elective); History (Elective); Design and Technology; Industrial Technology - Timber (Year 9) and Metal (Year 10); Graphics Technology; Information and Software Technology; Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS); Visual Arts.

During these two years students will complete Stage 5 of their schooling. Students will receive School Certificate Grades from the school in all of the courses studied in Stage 5. In November of Year 10 students will sit compulsory external School Certificate examinations in English Literacy, Mathematics, Science, a combined examination in Australian History, Australian Geography and Civics and Citizenship and a Computing Skills Test.

Years 11 and 12 (Stage 6)
In Years 11 and 12, students study Preliminary (Year 11) and Higher School Certificate (Year 12) courses and sit the external HSC Examinations in these courses at the end of Year 12.

At Knox, English and Mathematics are compulsory in Year 11 and English is compulsory in Year 12. Students also select additional courses to study such as: Agriculture, Ancient History and History Extension, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Design and Technology, Drama, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering Studies, English Extension One and Extension Two, French Continuers and Extension, Geography, German Continuers and Extension, Industrial Technology, Information Processes and Technology, Japanese Continuers and Extension, Legal Studies, Mathematics (all levels), Modern History and History Extension, Music Course 1, Course 2 and Extension, PDHPE (Personal Development Health and Physical Education), Physics, Society and Culture, Studies of Religion, Software Design, Visual Arts, as well as some other additional courses offered internally and externally.

Students must study a total of at least twelve units of study in Year 11 (usually consisting of six courses) and at least ten units in Year 12 (this usually involves studying five courses).
