The Knox History Tour is on Again!

The History Department of Knox Grammar School cordially invites Knox students to join us on our 2012 History Tour to London, France, Belgium and Italy. The tour will concentrate on key syllabus studies for both Ancient and Modern History. It will offer students a unique opportunity to absorb the delights of ancient monuments, World War I battlefields, historic sites, vibrant cities and magnificent spectacles. Their enjoyment will be enhanced by the involvement of experienced Knox staff and professional tour operators.

The tour will begin in London and take us to such places as Windsor Castle, the British Museum, the Tower of London and many other interesting locations included on the London Pass, as well as the opportunity to watch a Premier League soccer game and a West End Show. From there we will visit the Normandy Landing beaches of WWII and the WWI battlefields of Belgium and France. Emphasis will be on Australia’s involvement, including any personal connection that any of the boys on the tour may have with the events of WWI and WWII.

The tour of the battlefields is conducted with a professional guide, Colin Gillard, with whom we have had a long-standing relationship. We will also visit a combination of Commonwealth grave sites, relevant museums and the town of Villers-Bretonneux, which has particular relevance to Australia. On behalf of the school, the boys will lay a wreath during the Menin Gate ceremony and will have the opportunity to visit any gravesites that are relevant to their family. We will be based in the medieval town of Ypres where we will also visit the famous Cloth Hall. The tour attempts to make real the experience of young Australians who gave their lives on the battlefields of WWI and WWII.

The second leg of the tour will offer to students a unique opportunity to absorb the delights of Italy and gain an appreciation of the art galleries, architecture of the Renaissance and the history of ancient Rome. Students will be given the opportunity to walk through the ancient city of Pompeii. The tour will also take us through Sienna, San Gimignano, Florence and Rome, all of which contain numerous sites of historical and cultural significance.

The tour departs from Sydney on 4/12/2012 and returns on 20/12/2012. We have already had a lot of interest from parents and boys.
