There are many benefits to participating in swimming lessons during winter. In many cases, winter is one of the best times of the year to swim! Your child is more likely to progress further if they continue to practice and build upon the skills that they have already learnt during the warmer months. Be mindful that it can be hard to re-establish the swimming lesson routine if your child has had a significant break from lessons.

Many parents believe that swimming during the colder months could potentially cause a child to get the flu or to become sick. While you don’t have to worry about your child getting cold in an indoor pool, there are a few misconceptions that parents have that should be addressed.

The pool and air temperature is constant all year round. Children just need to be careful when exiting in the cold air, encourage your child to have a hot shower following their lesson and dress them in warm clothes and protect their head, ears and feet with warm clothes. It is not recommended to leave the swim centre wrapped in a wet towel or swimwear.

Evaluation feedback

Thank you to everyone that completed the Learn to Swim Evaluation last month. Overall, we are happy with the feedback we received; there were several common areas that customers commented on which we have addressed below. » Read More

Pool and Air Temperature
The air temperature in the centre is kept at a constant 29 degrees. We are aware that for spectators it can be quite hot and sometimes uncomfortable however the reasons for this are threefold;
  1. To keep your children warm in the water – the closer the air and water temperature, the warmer your children will be in the pool. If the air temperature was cooler, when your children are standing on the platforms or sitting on the edge of the pool, the cool air would make them feel cold. Cold children do not concentrate as well.
  2. To keep the water warm – the water is kept at a constant 31 degrees, if the air temperature is much cooler; the pool loses heat to the atmosphere and makes it more difficult for us to maintain the pool temperature. It takes 6 – 8 hours for us to raise the temperature of the pool by ½ degree.
  3. When there is a greater difference between water and air temperature the water heats the air, humidity rises and condensation forms. This is more uncomfortable.
Instructor consistency is important and we are aware that constant changes in instructors can affect your child’s progress. Where possible we do try to minimise instructor changes, instructors are allocated shifts based on their availability and are expected to attend their shift each week. Sometimes instructors get sick and unfortunately we need to replace them at short notice, all our instructors possess the skills and knowledge to provide your child with a quality lesson. If an instructor needs to miss more than one class, we do endeavour to have the same instructor cover the shift.

Unfortunately it is not possible for us to guarantee you a particular instructor on a permanent basis. When enrolling you book into a set day and time, we can ensure that you will always have lesson on this day and time, and we will always have an instructor available for you.

If an instructor is changing on a permanent basis we will have a handover where both the current instructor and new instructor will work together allowing the current instructor to provide the new instructor with information about your child, their progress and any other information relevant to your child’s lesson.

Children are assessed on an ongoing basis by their teachers. When their teacher feels they have met all the outcomes for their current level, they will request an assessment by the Program Coordinator. Once this assessment has been completed you will be informed when your child is ready to move up and your child will be issued with a certificate. If your child is not yet ready to move up, your child’s instructor will be informed what skills they still need to work on.

While all children progress at different rates, on average children will be in any given level for 6 – 12 months.

While we are continually monitoring the classes we don’t always see everything, you know your child best so if they are unhappy for any reason please let Sally or Carla know so we can help make swimming a fun and enjoyable activity for your children.

Carpark and tokens
In previous evaluations feedback was given that it was difficult to find a park and the car park was always full. In order for us to control access to the car park the boom gates were installed. This is to ensure Aquatic Centre parking is being used by Swim School families. We understand that it can be frustrating having to wait to collect a token at the conclusion of your lesson but we have found that this is the most efficient and effective way for us to control the car park.

Lane space and distances
Children learn best when doing multiple practices of correct technique over shorter distances. At Knox Aquatic Centre our focus is on teaching correct technique, and introducing our students to all four competitive strokes as early as possible. Students with good technique will develop speed and distance easily when given the opportunity. By keeping the distance short your children are able to practice and maintain their technique for the entire lap ensuring they are developing good skills. They do not get as tired and do not practice in a fatigued state. Swimming longer distances with inefficient technique is extremely tiring. When swimming shorter distances instructors are easily able to supervise children and correct technique when necessary.

Make-up Policy
We have heard your feedback and we will be undertaking a review of the make-up policy. While this occurs we will continue to use the current make-up policy. We require 7 days’ or more notice as this provides students opportunities to use the vacated spot as a make-up class. A number of swim schools do not provide make-ups but we realize it is an important quality for our swim school to be understanding of your family’s needs.
