CENTENARY STORIES

Our first Headmaster Neil H MacNeil: a Military Cross recipient, Rhodes scholar and keen sportsman

Military Cross recepient, Rhodes Scholar and keen sportsman Neil MacNeil (1893-1946) was Knox Grammar School’s first Headmaster when the School was established in 1924. Prior to starting at Knox, MacNeil served in World War 1 in the Highland Infantry and Royal Flying Corps.

Under MacNeil’s leadership, Knox grew rapidly in size and academic achievement. The boys’ nickname for MacNeil was ‘The Boss’. MacNeil led Knox through the Great Depression; student numbers rose from 28 in 1924 to over 300 in 1939, when MacNeil left Knox to become Headmaster of Wesley College in Melbourne.

As the first Headmaster of Knox, he set a tone for the School which is still evident today - a School that educates the whole boy.

“If the boys learn to overcome difficulties and to form habits of work, they will be well on the way to accomplish the hardest task of all, which is self-mastery.” Neil MacNeil, 1926
