CENTENARY STORIES

The Knox Grammarian artwork

The Cover

The first Knox Grammarian cover was drawn by Mr Thomas Oliver Knox in 1928. T O Knox worked at the School as a Mathematics teacher from 1924 to 1933. He also taught art and held the positions of Form Master, North House Housemaster, Sports Master, and Rugby coach. The T O Knox Drawing Prize was presented for the first time in 1928, awarded to Stewart M Morson (OKG30). His impact on the students in visual arts became apparent when in 1930 art began appearing in the Grammarian as section headers. The first featured artist was most likely John Charles Paton (OKG31), with the initials JCP, who would go on to serve on the Grammarian Committee in 1932.

Banners

The first art published in the Grammarian came in the form of section banners for the Editorial and Original pieces. The OKGA banner first appeared in the August 1933 Grammarian and remained the longest unaltered featured banner in the Knox Grammarian. A football banner and cricket banner were introduced in the 1938 Grammarians. Over time banners for sports, House activities, Prep and new sections were added and amended.

Student Art

The first student art projects appeared in the August 1939 Grammarian, with lino cuts by ’MMM‘, which was possibly Michael Mackenzie Miller (OKG43) and ’JBS‘, which may be the work of John Bruce Steggles (OKG40).
