CENTENARY STORIES

The legend of Jimmy the Cart Horse

In 1924, Knox 1 was under construction. James Bartlett (OKG28) wrote that the Oval was built by horse and manpower, with the Knox boys doing their part by collecting rocks and planting grass.

In the winter of 1925 and until the oval was ready, Jimmy the Cart Horse’s field was used for sport. In 1938, Chilton’s Orchard was purchased to provide additional playing fields and is now known as Gillespie Field.

This photograph was taken by A H (Mick) Hall (OKG40). It is one of the images that won the School’s Photographic Club’s competition in 1938.
