The art exhibition event started with canapés and live music in the Great Hall Foyer, followed by an awards ceremony presented by Wendy Shearer (Senior School Visual Arts Teacher and Head of Department) and Headmaster Scott James.
At the podium, Reyaan (Year 11) shared his reflections with his peers and with the Knox community. Here is Reyaan’s speech:
“Studying Visual Arts from Stage 4 through to Stage 6 has been an enriching journey that has profoundly shaped my learning, creativity, and perspective. I often like to think of this experience like an Impressionist painting — being bold, energetic, and full of vibrant colours. Each brush stroke laboured through skills, ideas, and challenges.
“Stage 4 was the underpainting of this journey, where I first encountered new materials, techniques, and processes. It was here that I learned to express my ideas visually, and appreciate the importance of patience, organisation, and thoughtful observation. These skills that have extended far beyond the art classroom.
“In Stage 5, my approach became way more deliberate as I explored how artworks reflect culture, history, and context. Class discussions, and hands-on projects reshaped how I interpret the world. Nurturing a critical and empathetic mindset that has not only enriched my artistic practice, but also my learning in all my other subjects.
“Now, in Stage 6, Visual Arts feels like a collage, laid with technical precision and intellectual depth. The process of creating a body of work has demanded discipline, perseverance, and creative risk-taking. Every experiment, mistake, and breakthrough became a part of the work itself. And despite the occasional after-school scrambles to fix these problems, I did cherish these moments, knowing that our teachers and technicians have always been here to support us.
“Visual Arts has taught me to embrace ambiguity, to value the process as much as the outcome, and to think with both the emotional depth and analytical mindset. These skills have not only shaped how I learnt, but how I see and interact with the world.
“The mindset fostered through this subject will stay with me, continue to influence how I engage with ideas, challenges, and creativity, well into the future. Thank you.”
