Hugh Hudson Darling (OKG30)

Knox's #30 Student 1924

Hugh was the 30th enrolled student at Knox. He attended the School from 1924 to 1928. He was a member of South House and played in the School’s first 1st XV Rugby team as a fullback.

Hugh remembered the day boys would play tip-cat and kick the football on the oval. He participated in Track and Field and fondly recalled running the annual Paper Chase, an early version of Cross Country.

Hugh attended the first meeting of the Old Knox Grammarians’ Association in 1929.

After school, Hugh studied wool classing at East Sydney Technical Institute. He became a jackaroo at Blowering Station, Tumut, and gained experience at a dairy farm near Maitland. In 1935, Hugh married Kate Boag becoming the first Old Boy to be married. They had two children, Hugh and Marion. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force rising to the rank of Corporal in the 3 Operational Transport Unit. After the war finished, he returned to dairy farming in the Gloucester district. In 1958, he returned to wool classing with Grazcos.

In 1999, he retired with wife Kate and daughter Marion to a small property at Boorowa. He enjoyed country living until he passed away in 2001 at the age of 89.

Hugh’s nephew, John Boag (OKG64) and grandnephews John B M Boag (OKG04) and James S B Boag (OKG08) also attended the School.
