William Robert Aspinall MC enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps in 1916 aged 23. He was a Resident Medical Officer at Sydney Hospital, had three years’ experience in Greater Public Schools Cadet Corps and held the rank of Colour Sergeant.
During his military service, Captain Aspinall was a Medical Officer with the 1st Australian Field Ambulance. He received the Military Cross for acts of bravery saving wounded men on the battlefield at Lagnicourt on the Western Front. On 20 July 1917, he was reported as killed in action in Ypres, Belgium and is now resting in Reningheist New Military Cemetery.

The Aspinall Cup is the longest-awarded prize at the School. Rex D Fisher (OKG27) was the first recipient. It was initially presented to the most improved player, but today it is presented to the most outstanding competitor in Open Rugby.
