CENTENARY STORIES

Magpie – our first student magazine launched in 1928

The first edition of Magpie was published in 1928. Contributors to this edition were Alister Murdoch (OKG31), Gordon Greenwood (OKG30), JGH –possibly James Gordon Hendry (OKG30) – and a boy writing under the pseudonym ‘Nodrog’. The cost of the edition was two pence, and this price was reduced to a penny for contributors.

The contents of the magazine which ran 12 pages were topics to pique boys’ interests:

  • Serial Story
  • Hobbies
  • Jokes
  • Things to Make
  • From Near and Far
  • School Happenings
  • Magpie Bookshelf
  • Exchange Column

There was something for every reader: thrilling stories of monsters with evil intent, how to make a circuit or a toboggan, football results and general laughs.
