CENTENARY STORIES

Wedding bells ring at the William McIlrath War Memorial Chapel

The first wedding in the William McIlrath War Memorial Chapel was the marriage of Mr Peter Wood (OKG54) (dec'd) and Miss Barbara de Groot on 22 November 1962. Peter was a Knox student from 1947 to 1954 and was the Honorary Secretary of the Old Knox Grammarians' Association from 1958 to 1961.

The ceremony was conducted in the evening and presided over by Reverend D Flockhart. The Daily Telegraph reported two of the listed groomsmen were also Knox Old Boys of the 1954 graduating class, Peter Conde and Michael Blackwell.

Knox Grammar School has been a part of the Wood Family for three generations. Not long after their marriage, Peter and Barbara baptised their first child in the Chapel. Peter’s son Antony (OKG83) and grandson Harry (OKG19) also went on to attend Knox.

Weddings, as well as baptisms and funerals are still held to this day at the Chapel. For more information regarding bookings, please click here.
