James (Jim) Richard Thomson OKG31

Knox’s #1 Student 1924

James (also known as Jim) was the first enrolled student at Knox – Student Number 1. He attended the School from 1924 to 1931.

James was a great sportsman. A member of the first 1st XV of 1924 at the age of ten, James returned to the 1st XV in his final year in 1931, going on to win colours and the Captain Robert William Aspinall MC Memorial Prize. James was a great runner and showed immense courage when he set an Associated Schools’ Mile record in 1931, which in turn sealed the Knox win of the Associated Championship. James was also involved in boxing, diving, lifesaving, swimming and military training.

James lived the Knox values throughout his schooling years and honoured his position as Student Number 1 through his loyal and continuous support of the School post-graduation. He was a member of the OKGA until his death, as well as a member of the Past Parents’ Association and the Senior Knoxonians, and always made time to attend School functions.

James was a man of great integrity and wisdom, regularly engaging with headmasters and council chairs and often providing wise counsel. He enjoyed writing letters to the School, including memorabilia and stories to ensure that the traditions and heritage were preserved.

His brother Benjamin (OKG34) attended the School until 1932. James’ three sons James Anthony (Tony) Thomson (OKG57), Robert Norman Thomson (OKG58), Phillip (Birdseed) Richard Thomson (OKG62) also attended the School, playing for the 1st XV like their father James, and all similarly receiving colours. Both Tony and Phillip still regularly visit Knox and Phillip’s ongoing support of the Heritage Centre through contributions of memorabilia and history are gratefully acknowledged. Five grandsons attended Knox, as well as two great grandsons, the most recent of whom completed his Schooling in 2022. An impressive 12 Thomson family members have attended the School and further family members are enrolled for 2024 and beyond.
