Biographies

Colin Stewart Peebles (OKG29)

Knox’s #13 Student 1924

Colin was the 13th enrolled student at Knox. He attended the School from 1924 to 1929. He won the French Prize in 1926, the School Oration Prize in 1927 and gained 6th place in Form V and 7th Place in Form VI. He participated in the Drama Club, Debating and Drill. He served on the Library and Grammarian Committees for two years and was appointed a Probationer in his final year.

After school, he served for a number of years in the office of an insurance company, and after passing exams in advertising, he became the company manager of General Plastics Ltd in 1936. He enlisted in the Australian Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant in the 30th Australian Infantry Battalion. During his service, he married Dorothy Radcliff in 1944.

He served on the OKGA Committee from 1930 to 1936 and again from 1946 to 1951. In May 1946 Colin was appointed as the OKGA representative to School Council. In 1952 became a Councillor in his own right and served until his death in 1963.

In 1963 the OKGA planted trees on either side of the William McIlrath War Memorial Chapel and embedded a plaque in the top step of the entrance in memory of Colin.
