James Robert (Gabby) Adam (OKG29)

Knox’s #15 Student 1924

James, also known as Gabby, was the 15th enrolled student at Knox. He attended the School from 1924 to 1929. In 1924 James won the Holiday English Essay Prize and placed second in his Form. From 1926 to 1929 he was awarded second place in his Form on three occasions and was Dux of his Form in 1927. James was an original member of the first 1st XV and participated in Track and Field, receiving Colours in 1929. He participated in House competitions, Debating and served on the Grammarian Committee. In Drill competitions, James led No 10 Section of the III Platoon. In his Senior year, he was appointed Senior of North House.

After school, he studied and became a mining engineer in Broken Hill. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1940 and rose to the rank of Captain in the 2/3 Pioneer Battalion. James married Nina Bills in 1943.

His brother John (OKG30) started in 1925 and his nephew John (OKG62) also attended the School.
