Donald Dewar McNaughtan (OKG28)

Knox’s #16 Student 1924

Donald was the 16th enrolled student at Knox. He attended the School as a boarder from 1924 to 1928. Donald recalled coming to school for the first time by train, a 500-mile journey, with his father. As one of the first boarders, he remembers the social activities of the boarders as bushwalking, tennis, visiting the milk bars and being hosted by day boy families.

Donald played in the first 1st XV in 1924 recalling the first inter-school match against Barker, which started an hour late because Knox didn’t have any uniforms. He played in the 1st XI from 1924 to 1928, achieving Bowling Prizes. Donald remembered practising cricket on the croquet lawn with Headmaster Neil MacNeil coming to bowl to the students.

Donald also participated in Track and Field and Debating. Donald was Dux of his Form from 1924 to 1926. He was the School House Captain from 1926 to 1928. Donald is considered to be the first School Captain as Senior Probationer in 1928.

His duty to the family grazing property ‘Pokataroo’, near Collarenebri, led Donald to leave Knox in the first term of 1928, as his father was terminally ill. He continued to look after the property for many years then moved to Tamworth to work on his own farm. He married Joan Peak and they had four children. At the time of his death in 1994, Donald was the oldest living of the original students of 1924.

Donald’s brothers, Peter (OKG34), Alistair (OKG35) and Ian (OKG39) attended the School, as did, Donald’s son, Donald Alastair (OKG70) and nephews Peter (OKG59) and William (OKG60).

The McNaughtan Award was established in order to honour the memory of Donald, who – according to founding Headmaster Neil MacNeil – was a "voracious" reader. It is presented weekly to students who are working hard, doing their best, and achieving great things.
