He served in the Royal Navy and was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for his duty as the principal medical officer on the HMS Achilles in the Battle of River Plate, the first major naval engagement of World War Two, against the German battleship, ‘Graf Spee’ in 1939.
He married Louise Riley in 1944 and had a son and a daughter. He became a Professor of Physiological Hygiene and was integral in the establishment of Shell Tunstall Toxicology Laboratory in England.
