Biographies

James Gordon Hendry MC (OKG30)

Knox's #34 Student 1924

James was the 34th enrolled student at Knox. He attended the School as a boarder from 1924 to 1930.

He excelled in Cricket and Rugby, Boxing and Life Saving. James played for the first ever 1st XV and 2nd XI. He also participated in House Music and acted in the 1930 Drama Production of 'Ambrose and Applejohn'.

After school, James became a Residential Tutor at The Scots College, Sydney in Kirkland boarding house from 1935 to 1938. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney in 1936 and worked at Sydney Church of England Grammar School for a short time in 1939.

James was first Knox Old Boy to hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and the first to be awarded a Military Cross. Sadly, he was a casualty of war in September 1945. He is remembered on the Old Boys’ War Memorial.

A relative attended the School.
