Biographies

John Ovans Adam (OKG30)

Knox's #41 Student 1925

John was the 41st student enrolled at Knox. He attended the School from 1925 to 1931. John was awarded 2nd Place in Form III in 1926 and 1927 and was awarded places in his Form in each subsequent year.

In 1927, he was the first recipient of the Andrew Reid Scholarship. He participated in Debating and Cadets and was on the Library and Grammarian Committees. John was on the 2nd XI Cricket team in 1928 and 1929. In his final years, he was a Prefect, Probationer, North House Captain, and Quarter Master Sergeant.

John recalls that sporting matches against Cranbrook involved travelling by train, ferry and tram. He remained grateful to Andrew Reid for the Scholarship which paid not only for school fees but also books and some of his lunches.

After school, he attended the University of Sydney to study Science. He became an Industrial Chemist with British Tobacco Company and remained with the company for 44 years. He married Ruth and had two children.

His brother James (OKG29) and another relative also attended the School.
