John was the 43rd student enrolled at Knox. He attended the School from 1925 to 1930. He was awarded Second Place Prize in Form II and Fifth Place Prize in Form III. In his final year, he won Second Place in Form Remove.

After school, John became a salesman and later a company manager. John enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1941 rising to the rank as Flight Lieutenant in RAAF HQ. He married Ida Jones in 1942, and they had children.
