Colin Hardinge Fitzhardinge (OKG31)

Knox’s #8 Student 1924

Colin (pictured front row, fourth from left) was the eighth enrolled student at Knox. He attended the School from 1924 to 1928. Colin competed in House competitions for North House and participated in the Choir. He placed tenth in his Form in 1928. He left Knox to go to The Kings School in Paramatta, graduating in 1931.

After school, he became a farmer and lived on a property called Wongalong in NSW's Central Tablelands. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 where he met Joan Phison AM. They married in 1944 and had two children. Joan was a celebrated Australian writer of children’s books and based many of her stories on the family farm which was used as a wildlife sanctuary.

Colin’s brother Brian (OKG33) attended the School from 1925 until his death in 1932. The Fitzhardinge Gate was donated by the family in memorial. Knox boys continue to doff their boaters in honour of Colin’s memory. Colin’s cousins also attended the School in the 1930s and 1940s.
