CENTENARY STORIES

Foundation Sport: Boxing

Boxing was one of the original sports offered by Knox. Knox boxing classes and competitions were held on the tan bark floor of the first gymnasium which consisted of only a roof and supports. The first Inter-House competition was held in 1929 with North House winning five out of seven events. Jim Thomson (OKG31) recalls about 12 boys taking part in boxing lessons with Alf Taylor.

Alf Taylor was among the first visiting Masters appointed in 1924. He was described as gentlemanly, courteous, respected by all and a great sportsman with significant knowledge in self-defence.

Alf was a lightweight boxing champion in Scotland and England and represented Great Britain in wrestling at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics Games and he represented Australia at the 1919 Paris Allied Games. In both Games he came second.

Alf instructed Knox students in boxing for 30 years and donated a boxing prize for students showing improvement and skill in the sport. Jim Thomson was the first student to win a boxing trophy. Boxing ceased at Knox after Alf’s sudden passing in March 1966.
