CENTENARY STORIES

Knox the first school to journey to Central Australia

Second Headmaster Dr William Bryden’s educational philosophy was one that encouraged Senior boys to take individual initiative in their work. Knox students were the first school group permitted to visit Central Australia. Far from a holiday excursion, the students were given roles in small groups collecting biological, and geology specimens for return to the National Insectarium and Herbarium. Edric Chaffer (OKG50) narrated the ABC program 'Red Horizons', which covered the trip where his lifelong love of Geology was born.
Under the expert guidance of C P Mountford, anthropology was studied. Geography and navigation skills were taught to the students; they found their way using a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) map issued in 1944. Mr “Ossie” Andrews of Curtain Springs Station and Aboriginal elders provided local knowledge.

The radio group sent and received telegrams, were in contact with the Flying Doctor Service in Alice Springs, the Department of Public information, and press and radio. Diarists and photographers documented the expedition for posterity.

The Heritage Centre holds many photographs and specimens in the Collection, as well as the recollections and diaries of the boys and masters who attended this expedition.
