CENTENARY STORIES

'The Importance of Being Earnest' takes centre stage

In 1929 the students formed a Dramatic Society to develop themselves in speech and presentation, encourage self-confidence, and critically analyse the arts. The first School production was The Importance of Being Earnest and took place on 6 and 7 December 1929 in the Masonic Hall at Turramurra.

The production raised funds for the purchase of a set of hurdles. In the following years funds were raised for a fence around the swimming pool and maintenance of the playing fields.

The Knox Grammarian described the play as follows:

“This year’s play is The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde. Actually, it is a period play, but we have endeavoured to modernise it without spoiling any of Wilde’s brilliance. This has been accomplished by replacing obsolete words by modern ones. The Importance of Being Earnest was far in excess of expectations. Outstanding in the cast were W P Ash, J S Yeomans and C S Peebles. G L Kenway was excellent as the Rev. Chasuble.”
