On Thursday 13 February, the five schools comprising the Combined Associated Schools (CAS) Army Cadet Units came together for the CAS Cadet Conference.
Knox Grammar School
Knox Grammar School, Barker College, St Aloysius' College, Trinity Grammar School, and Waverley College collaborated with Knox as the organiser and host school. The conference saw cadet leaders of the CAS schools meet for the first time as they engaged in discussions about running their respective units. Simultaneously, the Australian Army Cadets (AAC) staff discussed various aspects of AAC and CAS business.
An inspirational keynote by James Castrission (OKG00) was the first session of the day; James was invited by the Old Knox Grammarians’ Association (OKGA) on behalf of the Unit. The Old Boy highlighted the significance of planning and preparing for risk, while also speaking about life after school, and the character-building value of challenging oneself in the great outdoors. James and his good friend Justin Jones (OKG00) experienced an arduous journey across Antarctica where they overcame fear of failure. The trek showed the importance of focusing on factors within one’s own control, including output, while listening to the environment. By operating at sustainable levels, James and Justin had energy reserved for unexpected obstacles that laid ahead. All in all, a highly motivational, engaging and inspirational recount of their South Pole adventure. Cadets were glued to their seats.
In the second session, Deputy Headmaster 7-12 – Students, Mr Sam White delivered a talk on student wellbeing, and the third session entailed staff and student discussions. The student forum, hosted by the Knox Ravenswood Cadet Unit's Senior Under Officer, discussed ways activities were best run, for AFX Camp and Training.
The event concluded with the annual CAS Cadet Units’ Conference and Mess Dinner, overlooking Knox 1. The dinner provides an opportunity for the staff of the units to discuss, network, and connect.
