Head of Knox Senior Academy

What's your role at Knox?

I'm the Head of Senior Academy. I oversee the day-to-day world of the Year 11 and Year 12 cohorts. The job description is extensive and involves both pastoral care and academic responsibility for all students.

How long have you been with the School?

I started at Knox in 1994 as a graduate teacher in Science. I taught Junior Science and Senior Chemistry and Physics. I left Knox in 2001 to work in both single sex (male and female) and co-ed schools. I returned to Knox midway through 2008.

What does a typical day look like for you at Knox?

Busy, but enjoyable. Every day is different, with new challenges. You have a sense of achievement that you have helped support the students.

What three things do you love most about working at Knox?

Working with the boys directly and seeing them grow and mature through the journey, being immersed is such a wonderful community and helping to maintain the culture that is Knox.

What or who inspired you to pursue a career in education?

My Science Teacher, Mr Thompson.

What part of your role do you gain the most joy?

Working with each and every boy and supporting them to achieve their personal best is number one for me.

Why did you join Knox?

I had no idea where Knox was until I looked it up on the map. Knox has been a huge part of my life and it certainly provided me with a job that is highly satisfying.

What is the secret to good teaching and inspiring our young people?

Building rapport.

What achievement are you most proud of from your time at Knox so far?

Collectively, watching boys leave Knox with a smile on their face. Hearing Old Boys reflect on their journey with very positive, long-lasting memories.

What’s your leadership style?

Empowering the people around me to be their best and learn something new every day.

What impact do you hope to leave on your students?

To never give up, always try new things and strive for your personal best in everything you do

What is the biggest challenge facing the education sector at the moment? What would you like to see in the future or how do you intend to help fix the problem?

Developing collaborative individuals that see teamwork and strong relationships as the key to success.

Who are you outside of Knox?

My two passions are hanging out with my family and surfing as much as possible.

Share one fun fact that people might not know about you.

My favourite word is canoe.

What advice would you give to anyone joining Knox?

Knox is all about community, where a strong social and academic culture is welcoming and allows every student to find their niche.
