MICHAEL QUACH

Deputy Head of Knox Preparatory Grammar School

What's your role at Knox?

I'm the Deputy Head of Prep. In my role, I am responsible for the daily operations of the School. I also work closely with the Directors to provide leadership across pastoral care and student wellbeing, curriculum, learning enhancement and professional development.

How long have you been with the School?

Five and a half years.

What does a typical day look like for you at Knox?

No one day looks the same, that’s why I love it!

What three things do you love most about working at Knox?

Amazing students, incredibly talented and friendly staff and super supportive families.

What or who inspired you to pursue a career in education?

Growing up, I always wanted to teach young children.

What part of your role do you gain the most joy?

I most enjoy the daily interactions with the students.

Why did you join Knox?

Knox has an excellent reputation for providing an innovative, future focused education, coupled with a rigorous Science of Wellbeing framework. The Knox Total Fitness model, which aims to develop balanced, well-rounded individuals, also aligns strongly with my own personal beliefs.

What is the secret to good teaching and inspiring our young people?

To teach a student well, first you must work out what they know, and then determine what they need to learn next. Most importantly; however, you must earn their trust and respect so that they will stretch out of their comfort zone when the learning gets hard!

What achievement are you most proud of from your time at Knox so far?

I am really proud of being able to play a small part in helping the community to support Alex Richter. Alex graduated Knox in 2020 and suffered a devastating spinal cord injury whilst doing the thing he loved most - mountain bike riding. Through raising awareness at Knox Prep and financially supporting research into a cure for spinal cord injuries, we have witnessed Alex go from strength to strength. He embodies the Knox values so strongly and is a wonderful role model for young Knox students.

What’s your leadership style and why have you found this to be successful?

I try to build open, honest and trusting relationships with everyone I work with. In doing so, people know that I aim to make decisions with the students’ best interests at heart, and generally they are happy to go out of their way to help.

What impact do you hope to leave on your students?

I hope that the students graduate Knox with a strong sense of who they are and the values by which they want to live their lives. I also hope that they have a love of learning and many strong friendships with whom they can share life’s journey.

Who are you outside of Knox?

I really enjoy playing sport. Most days, I am either playing tennis, golf, touch footy, surfing, running or swimming.

Share one fun fact that people might not know about you.

I am a very keen cook and I love to spend long days cooking and eating with family and friends.

What advice would you give to anyone joining Knox?

Fully immerse yourself in everything the School has to offer. The more you put in, the more you get back in return.
