What's your role at Wahroonga Preparatory School?

I am the Deputy Head of School. The job entails supporting the overall strategic vision and operational management of Wahroonga Preparatory School (WPS). Alongside a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing the academic programs, ensuring an alignment with NESA syllabuses and current research.

How long have you been with the School?

Seven years.

What’s a typical day look like for you?

A typical day at WPS begins with the energetic buzz of students arriving ready to engage in a diverse range of activities. Each day is varied with a wide range of interactions with students, staff, and parents to ensure that learning opportunities are maximised.

What three things do you love most about working at WPS?

Working with motivated students, passionate colleagues, and a supportive community.

What or who inspired you to pursue a career in education?

My genuine curiosity and love of learning inspired me to pursue a career in education. I enjoy the student’s thirst for knowledge and eagerness to learn.

What part of your role do you gain the most joy?

I love to see the joy and wonder in the students as they make new discoveries and to celebrate each child’s individual learning journey.

Why did you join Knox and WPS?

Knox has given me an opportunity to be part of a large dynamic community and to challenge myself professionally in learning new skills.

What is the secret to good teaching and inspiring our young people?

The secret to good teaching is to have your own passion for learning and to know your students. You need to be prepared to change and encompass research.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I have been very proud to have led and contributed to the implementation of the Science of Learning and responding to the latest research regarding best practice in our school. It has been my privilege to work with an energetic and responsive staff who have worked passionately to ensure that this approach is embedded into their daily programs. It has been gratifying to track the growth of our students.

What’s your leadership style and why have you found this to be successful?

My approach as the Deputy Head is founded on empathy, collaboration, and fostering a positive work climate. I believe in empowering team members, encouraging open communication, and valuing diverse perspectives.

What impact do you hope to leave on the students?

I aspire to empower my students with not just knowledge, but also with a deep sense of curiosity, resilience, and empathy. I hope to instil in them a passion for learning, critical thinking skills, and the confidence to pursue their dreams.

What is the biggest challenge facing the education sector at the moment? What would you like to see in the future or how do you intend to help fix the problem?

Managing change, I believe is one of the biggest challenges facing the education sector today. Schools in New South Wales are experiencing the implementation of many new syllabuses at an extremely fast pace. To embrace a culture of continuous learning and professional development among staff is crucial. We need to ensure we provide comprehensive training and support so that teachers can acquire the skills necessary to navigate the changes effectively, ensuring a seamless transition for both teachers and staff.

Who are you outside of Knox?

I am a wife, daughter, mother, and carer and I enjoy travelling, walking, and reading.
